Sift Report Email me

Hundreds of comments in. The pain points out.

Name a product or service category. I read what people say about it on Reddit, Hacker News and other forums, merge the repeats, and send you its pain points. Each one comes with how many people raised it and links to the original threads.

What one entry looks like (from a test run on wired earbuds)

Cheap third-party wired earbuds on an iPhone are a hassle

People describe static when the cable moves, volume jumping to full, Siri starting on its own, adapters that wear out, and no way to charge while listening. One person had only just found out that new earbuds can need an adapter at all.

Worth knowing: audio enthusiasts in the same thread rate Apple's own $10 USB-C adapter highly for sound, even though others report it wearing out.

What you get

  • The pain points, ranked. Each in plain words, with the number of people who raised it, the threads it came up in, upvotes and dates.
  • Links to every source. Open any thread and check it yourself.
  • What people praise. So you know what to keep, not only what to fix.
  • Brands and models people name, and what each is known for.
  • What the evidence can't tell you. Forum posts are not sales figures, and a report says where its evidence is thin.

A test report on wired earbuds covered 40 threads and 490 comments from 353 people.

The summaries are mine. I don't paste people's posts into your report; I link to them.

What I leave out

  • "Severity 85/100" from two posts. You get counts you can check, not a score nobody can explain.
  • The same problem listed twice under different names. Repeats are merged, and each person is counted once.
  • A fixed quota of 15 pain points. If a category has seven real ones, the report has seven.
  • Off-topic results that a filter let through. I read every thread, so they don't reach you.

Automated tools are fast and cheap. This is slower and done by hand, because the useful part is noticing what a keyword match misses.

How it works

  1. You email me the category and the decision you're making with it: a product to launch, a listing to fix, a feature to build.
  2. I reply within a day with a price and a turnaround, usually 1 day for a narrow category and 3 days for a broad one.
  3. I collect the discussions, read them, and write the report.
  4. You get the report with every source linked. If something in it is unclear, ask and I'll answer.

Works best for consumer products, services and software. I don't take medical or legal topics.
